What does my BMI mean?
Body Mass Index is used to determine if you are in a healthy range for your height.
To calculate BMI, your weight (kg) is divided by the square of your height (m).
If your BMI is less then 18.5, you are considered underweight
If your BMI is 18.5 - <25, you are considered healthy
If your BMI is 25 -<30, you are considered overweight
If your BMI is 30 or higher, you are considered obese
Am I Eligible?
Indications for referral to a bariatric surgeon vary according to a patient’s BMI and other illnesses:
Class 1: BMI of 30 - <35 in a person with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes despite optimal medical management
Class 2: BMI of 35 - <40, plus an obesity-related disease or a risk factors such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis, amongst others.
Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher
