What does my BMI mean?

Body Mass Index is used to determine if you are in a healthy range for your height.

To calculate BMI, your weight (kg) is divided by the square of your height (m).

  • If your BMI is less then 18.5, you are considered underweight

  • If your BMI is 18.5 - <25, you are considered healthy

  • If your BMI is 25 -<30, you are considered overweight

  • If your BMI is 30 or higher, you are considered obese


Am I Eligible?

Indications for referral to a bariatric surgeon vary according to a patient’s BMI and other illnesses:

  • Class 1: BMI of 30 - <35 in a person with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes despite optimal medical management

  • Class 2: BMI of 35 - <40, plus an obesity-related disease or a risk factors such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis, amongst others.

  • Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher
